Streaming to YouTube
YouTube Live is one of the most popular live streaming platforms. pMix.studio has a built-in YouTube preset that configures the recommended settings automatically.
Prerequisites
- A YouTube account with live streaming enabled (may require 24-hour activation for new accounts)
- A stable internet connection with at least 4–8 Mbps upload speed
Getting your stream key
- Go to YouTube Studio
- Click Go Live (or the Create button → Go Live)
- Choose Stream (for a persistent stream key) or Schedule (for an event)
- Under Stream Settings, copy your Stream key
Keep your stream key private — anyone with it can stream to your channel.
Configuring pMix.studio
- Open the output settings and tap Live Streaming
- Under Add Destination, tap YouTube, then choose Paste stream key — the ingest URL is filled in for you
- Paste your stream key (the Get your YouTube stream key link in the editor jumps straight to YouTube Studio)
- Review the settings (pMix.studio applies YouTube’s recommended defaults):
Prefer not to handle keys at all? Choose Sign in to YouTube instead — pMix.studio fetches your stream key automatically every time you go live, and nothing is stored on the iPad.

YouTube supports up to 4K streaming, but 1080p at 4500 kbps provides a good balance of quality and reliability for most connections.
Going live
- Tap GO LIVE in pMix.studio’s output controls
- pMix.studio connects to YouTube’s RTMP ingest server
- In YouTube Studio, you’ll see the preview populate within 10–30 seconds
- YouTube may show a brief buffering period — this is normal
- Your stream is now live to your audience
If you signed in
A signed-in YouTube destination does more than fetch a key. pMix creates and manages the broadcast for you: it checks the ingest is reachable before it dials, transitions the broadcast to live once video is arriving, and ends it properly when you stop.
If a reconnect happens mid-show it goes back to the same broadcast rather than starting a second one, and if YouTube’s primary ingest is unreachable pMix fails over to the backup ingest host.
Quota limits. YouTube caps how many broadcasts an account can create per day. If you hit it, pMix says so and reuses the current session’s ingest rather than failing — and shows the cool-down, so you know it’s YouTube’s limit and not your rig.
Ending the stream
- Tap Stop in pMix.studio
- The RTMP connection closes
- YouTube ends the live stream and begins processing the VOD (video on demand) recording
Going straight back on air? YouTube won’t accept a new stream immediately after one ends. pMix holds off and shows how long is left; START NOW overrides it if you’re sure.
Tips
- Test your connection before going live with a private/unlisted stream
- Monitor the health indicator in pMix.studio’s status bar — yellow or red indicates potential issues
- YouTube’s latency settings (Ultra-low, Low, Normal) are configured in YouTube Studio, not in pMix.studio
- Stream recordings are automatically saved to your YouTube channel as VODs
- If you experience buffering or drops, try lowering the bitrate to 2500–3000 kbps
Troubleshooting
- “Stream key invalid” — Double-check the key in YouTube Studio; make sure there are no extra spaces
- Stream not appearing in YouTube Studio — Ensure your internet connection is stable and the RTMP URL is correct
- Poor quality — Increase the bitrate (up to 8000 kbps for 1080p) if your upload speed supports it
- Stream dropping — Lower the bitrate, switch to a wired connection, or use a more stable network. pMix reports why a stream dropped and reconnects on its own; see Custom RTMP Server.
- Wrong stream key — Correct it in the destination editor while the stream is still retrying. The new key is used on the next attempt, without stopping and starting over.
